Explain Everything: A Whiteboard for Teaching

August 15, 2024 I have been looking for a web application that would let me do more than just record my voice when making a recording. I have seen the examples in the LIS 568 PD assignment where the information is presented in an interactive format. The presenter not only speaks, but also shows and explains thing in live actions, so everything is playing out before our eyes. I have also seen other students utilizing this tool to deliver works that are more engaging and fun to watch than the PowerPoint slide presentation. I searched a few sites that I suspected to provide the tool to create the interactive presentation seen in the example (Wix, Google, etc.) but none answered my question.  I took a look into the Whiteboard in ExplainEverything, which I had stumbled upon early in the course through an article (I forgot which one). The article talked about students using educational technology to demonstrate creativity in a school project. In this case, a student used Whiteboard...

Immersive learning and fun adventure with CoSpaces Edu

August 6 I was looking for an idea of a web tool for my blog this week and I came across this one from reading my peer's post on using AR/VR for learning at school in this week's discussion. I have to give that student the credit and many thanks for opening up a new world of educational tools to me by exploring this site! CoSpaces Edu for kid-friendly 3D creation and coding https://www.cospaces.io/ This is a such a kids friendly and educational oriented site with amazing tools and resources for kids and teachers. It is an eye opener and probably the best web tool in the sense of its creative and educational content as well as ease and safety of use, that I have so far explored in this course! Considering that this site is all about AR/VR and resources that support teachers and students for learning in an safe environment, in context of this week's topic on AR/VR, this is a perfect choice for my blog. CoSpaces Edu is completely free to use and access many features including...

A web tool to collate research work and plan lessons: Wakelet

July 30 The weekly podcast on social media briefly discusses Wakelet as a site that allows you to put together digital information and add value to the content you curated. Given the vast amount of information on the internet that would be lost if not stored properly,  this would be a useful tool to essentially relocate your online resources by topics or tasks and work in ways as needed to complete the task.  I explored this tool and this is what I found. https://wakelet.com/collections Wakelet is a content curation platform where you can create engaging collections that can be shared and collaborated with your class, team, or community.  You can sign in as educators or students. The sign-in is free. For teachers, Wakelet can be used to arrange learning materials and present them in engaging and interactive ways to improve and enhance the learning experience, while supporting independent learning and digital citizenship. Lesson planning on Wakelet turns a boring process ...

Learning Safe Surfing through Games on FBI website

July 24 The US government provides an online resource where teachers and students can get help with cyber citizenship.  Welcome to sos.fbi.gov — FBI Safe Online Surfing (SOS)   https://sos.fbi.gov/en . This is a mission statement on the website: " The goal of FBI-SOS is to promote cyber citizenship and help students learn about online safety while engaging in fun, interactive games. The program was designed to address current Internet safety threats while keeping each grade level's online usage and knowledge in mind. We hope that you find the program beneficial and that your students use the information to make themselves safer digital citizens." This website is very intuitive to use. You simply select a a grade from 3-8 and the game is ready to go. You do not need instructions to play as it's clear from the outset what to do. You do not need to maneuver complicated moves as the main goal of the game is to raise students' awareness of cyber citizenship. You simply...

Creating your own book with Storybird

July 13 Storybird - Read, write, discover, and share the books you'll always remember. I came across this tool on Hall, Nathan Webtools https://nathanghall.wordpress.com/webtools-no-registration-needed-for-students/   This online resource was included in Week 6's Reading and Assignment. It may be meant to help us with the website Resources assignment, which requires a wide range of webtools. Nathan Hall's page is a toolkit or a collection of webtools that anyone can use to explore their creativity or work on a project. The tool must meet four criteria. It's free. Teachers may have to register, but there is no need for students to sign in with an email or a social media account. The student can interact and be creative with the tool. There is no need to install something. I looked at some of my fellow students' website assignment. Someone's work created in the form of a storybook caught my eyes. The book opens up and after you have read it, it turns to the next p...

TeachingBooks: Building deep connections to books

July 3 I explored this online database in another course. I will share what I discovered about this educational tool. TeachingBooks  TeachingBooks | Author & Book Resources to Support Reading Education https://school.teachingbooks.net/ This database is focused on connecting the readers with books and resources to enrich the reading experience and create educational value for K-12 students and teachers. The materials on this site can be used in educational and home settings. I did not sign in to an account, so I was not able to see the contents of documents such as activities and lessons tied with a title or Meet-the-Author recording. From what I was able to see and discover on the TeachingBooks.net, it has many valuable features. The most notable one, in my opinion is that the database was founded on the premises that there is a special value to see and hear authors talk about their works. Building on this premise and the founder's experience with hosti...

Media Literacy Now: States' legislative initiatives

June 28  Perspective: In recent reading and discussions of this course, we had opportunities to explore the role of school librarian in supporting the use of Ed Tech in schools and help students developing knowledge and skills needed in the digital age. We have seen that federal and state’s legislations play a big part in these areas. As school librarians, we have the responsibility to be at the forefront of digital technologies and resources and providing them in ways consistent with the laws. It is challenging work given the continuously changing technologies. The challenge is even greater if not knowing if there are legislations that have a direct impact on what we do as school librarians, or not having a clear understanding of what the law says In an article by Dawkins, A (2020), the authors points out about the confusion and uncertainty about the role and responsibilities of school librarians in teaching about digital citizenship. A study conducted after the state of Ut...
